The Natural History
Museum in Maastricht is in a very attractive building next to a small deer
park. In this museum you can learn a lot about the natural history of the
Limburg region. One of the major exhibits is the skeleton of a giant
mosasaur.

Naturkunde in Maastricht ist in einem sehr schönen Gebäude neben
einem kleinen Tierpark. In diesem Museum erfährt man viel über die
Gesichte des Lebens in Limburg. Außerdem ist dort das Skelett eines
riesigen Mosasauriers zu sehen.One of the most interesting things in the museum are the fossils of Bèr, a giant mosasaur. These were sea reptiles which are found in the Maastricht region. (Southern Limburg was under a shallow lake in the cretaceous period). Bèr has his own glass display case in the inner courtyard of the museum. That dinosaurs were also found in Limburg in the cretaceous period is shown by fossils of a telmatosaurus which can also be seen in the museum. These were found on the former shore of the lake.
Das Besondere an diesem Museum sind die Fossilien von Bèr, einem riesigen Mosasaurier. Diese waren Meeresreptilien, die in der Nähe von Maastricht gefunden werden. (Süd-Limburg lag in der Kreide unter Wasser.) Bèr hat im Innenhof des Museums seinen eigenen Glaskasten. Dass auch Dinosaurier in der Kreide in Limburg lebten, zeigen die Fossilien von einem Telmatosaurus, die man ebenso im Museum sehen kann. Diese wurden an der damaligen Küste entdeckt.
In the museum there is also a real beehive, as well as three small aquariums with sea urchins, starfish and various fish. There are also fossilised sea urchins, as well as two fossilised turtles. The largest amonite ever found in Holland can also be seen.
In dem Museum gibt es auch einen echten Bienenstock, sowie drei kleine Aquarien mit Seeigeln, Seesternen und verschiedenen Fischen. Von den Seeigeln gibt es auch Fosilien. Außerdem gibt es zwei fossile Schildkröten und den größten Amoniten, der jemals in Holland gefunden wurde.
There are also fossilised plants and a prehistoric landscape with plants made of real plastic! Also very interesting are the many mamouth fossils, including a huge tusk. There is very little about prehistoric man (only a small landscape). In the underground section of the museum there is not a lot to be seen, apart from a large amount of flint. Fortunately there are very few stuffed animals.
The museum is completely accesible to wheelchair users, but only by lift.

Pflanzenfossilien gibt es auch und dazu eine prähistorische Landschaft mit Pflanzen aus echtem Plastik! Ebenfalls sehr interessant sind die zahlreichen Mamuthfossilien, darunter auch ein riesiger Stoßzahn. Über Urmenschen gibt es fast nichts (nur eine kleine Landschaft). Im unterirdischen Teil des Museums ist auch nicht all zu viel zu sehen, außer einer Menge Feuersteine. Ausgestopfte Tiere gibt es zum Glück nicht zu viele.
Das Museum ist für Rollstuhlfahrer vollständig erreichbar, aber nur per Aufzug.
